As I was doing my morning walk today, I was listening to worship and felt God led me to a song that really I haven’t listened to in quite a while, and while I was listening one of the lines went like this.
“ He shall return in robes of white
The blazing sun shall pierce the night
And I will rise among the saints
My gaze transfixed on Jesus' face”
With the most sincere gratitude, I started crying as I heard those lyrics…a reminder of what we hope for and what we know God has promised us….spending eternity with Him. I don’t know if you ever think about the day when Jesus returns or what eternity will be like with Him, but I do often. More often in the past few years when I’ve had to face multiple diagnosis, surgeries, and recoveries. More often now too, when it seems like there are so many around me who are sick, suffering, or have died. The truth is, those days when I hear of yet another sick person, or someone who has passed away, or I am experiencing a lot of pain, it is hard to be positive and sometimes I get stuck. Maybe you do too. I imagine this is human nature and that I am not the only one who feels this way. However, I have had way too many encounters with our Lord and Savior to stay stuck. Remembering those is what helps me to move forward with my eyes on Him. So, when I hear a song with the lyrics above or any other song that talks about what eternity looks like, it puts a spark of excitement in me, and it reminds me why we are here living this life on earth right now, and more specifically why we are doing what we are, wherever we are.
This past July a very dear and close family friend of ours “tia” Roxana (in the grey jacket), a second mom to Clever suddenly passed away. It was heartbreaking. Her son Alvaro, one of Clever’s best friends from childhood, who lives in the US couldn’t come to the funeral because he too was fighting his own battle of colon cancer. So, when we found out that we would be going to the US for my surgery, he asked us to bring his mom’s ashes to him. So, we did. Clever did. Weeks before Clever traveled to him, his friend found out that he was terminal. With a heavy heart, Clever flew to see his best friend for what was the last time. It was a short trip, but with purpose. By the grace of God, his friend opened his heart to Jesus. You see the miracle in the story of both this mother and son was that 5 years ago they were both in the hospital fighting for their lives from COVID. Both nearly died. Neither knew the Lord. God in his infinite love and mercy saved them both from death 5 years ago to give them more time to KNOW HIM! The mother returned to Peru and grew in her walk with the Lord. Her life shined with the love of Jesus radiating in her. While they had different stories of coming to know the Lord, both received Him as Lord and Savior before it was too late. What an amazing privilege to be a part of their stories! Stories like theirs, is WHY we do what we do. We have such a loving and merciful Father who doesn’t want even one to be lost and so we continue to do our part.
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9 NIV
Andrick with his sign language interpreter AnA
This past weekend we celebrated the very first person who is deaf to pray the prayer of salvation during our church service that provides Peruvian Sign Language Interpretation!!!! This is a HUGE celebration! The deaf population here in Peru has limited resources to receive the message of the gospel in their own language. Over the past few years we have developed a small team of volunteers who are interpreting one church service a week!. And now, after all this time and work invested in this program, praise God, we have our first person who prayed the prayer of salvation during the church service!!! His name is Andrick. We praise God for the volunteers who have committed their time and talents to help bring people like Andrick to the church and help him “hear” the message of Jesus! We are excited for more people in the deaf community to join Andrick.
I know we are ¼ the way through 2025 already and we have not yet shared our goals for 2025. Recovery from the surgeries, our return to Peru a month ago, returning to some of our responsibilities here, and the start of the school year for Kaleb has kept us very busy. But now that we have settled into a routine, we would like to share our goals.
For this upcoming year, our mission remains the same. It is to make a way for everyone to have the opportunity to have a personal encounter with the Lord. More specifically vulnerable people, and those impacted by disability whose circumstances make it more difficult to attend church. Our specific goals are:
1. Develop and provide more training to all volunteers at our church to increase awareness and competency to receive people with disabilities and vulnerable children/youth so they can experience a place of belonging and a place to have a personal encounter with God.
2. Develop and launch a small group curriculum for +35 age group of people with intellectual/developmental disabilities.
3. Continue to build the community support group for parents/family members who care for a loved one with a disability
4. Help provide local churches with a vision of why it is important to include people with disabilities in the church body. And then help provide tangible steps on how to do it.
5. Continuing to be a part of the team who gives the gift of mobility to those in need through the partnership between Camino de Vida and Free Wheelchair Mission.
As you know as a missionary family, we receive 100% of our living expenses from your tax-deductible donations. We thank those who continue to believe in what we are doing here through your support. We praise God that we have received a few new monthly pledges to help offset the increase in our daily living expenses that have increased. We continue to have a deficit and are looking for new people to join our team so that we can cover our financial needs. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please let us know so we can reach out to them.
Thank you again for allowing us to have the privilege to give more people the opportunity to know the Lord and look forward to eternity with Him.
With love from our family to yours.
